About us
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, AN INTERLEAGUE ORGANIZATION ROLE AND FUNCTION
The League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County is an. Inter-League Organization
composed of the 12 local Leagues throughout the County.
The County League Board, which can have up to 16 experienced members is responsible for coordinating and directing activities to observe, monitor county level agencies and advocate on countywide issues. The Board chooses issues to follow based on County League positions and timeliness. Another function is to educate local League members by coordinating and presenting programs on state or national studies or issues of emphasis.
The County League Board (“Board”) organizes and presents programs with experts speaking on local, state and even national issues. This kind of member education and exchange is conducted through League Days and County Convention which are held on the last Saturday of January, March, April (when there is a June primary), July, and September (when there is a November election). These League Days are open to the public.
The Board also advocates on issues affecting the county. The League speaks with one voice and the president speaks on behalf of the League. The League advocates only on issues which it has studied and on which it has come to a consensus.
Voter Service is a core mission of the League of Women Voters. The County League role in Voter Service pertains specifically to countywide offices including:
- Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
- County District Attorney
- County Sheriff
- County Assessor
- County Superior Court Judges
The County League may co-sponsor candidate forums, such as County Supervisor or District Attorney, with local leagues or other organizations. They may also sponsor Candidate Forums or Fairs for Judicial offices.
The County League is the leader in providing information on Judicial candidates in its County Voter Guide, and online at the California League sponsored website www.votersedge.org. The Voter Guide also includes nonpartisan Pro and Con descriptions of state, county and local ballot measures.
The County League also trains League speakers on state and county ballot measures at Ballot Briefing events before a statewide election. League members analyze and write the Pro and Con description for each county measure.
Another core mission of the League of Women Voters is to keep watch on government at all levels. The County League may have members observe public commission and board meetings and report back to the Board. The County Board may then decide to make a public comment via the President based on their findings.
